TRACK
19 FEB 2010
By Tan Yi Xuan

Amidst the hustle and bustle of tutorials, lectures, labs and seminars, the fourth week of school unknowingly came to an end, marking yet again, the commencement of another weekend of Inter Hall games.

This time around, it was the long-awaited track heats and finals. As tradition necessitates, Hall of Residence Four, once again took up the responsibility of the convening hall. Hence, in the wee hours of the Sunday morning, hordes of Hall Four residents gathered and made their way down to the River Valley High track to prepare for the exciting event. Likewise, our team of runners pumped up their adrenaline by making their rounds around the track and doing stretches while waiting for the start of the event. By 9am in the morning, the track and spectator gallery was soon teeming with runners and supporters alike.

The track heats kicked off with the females 4X100 relay heats. Our female team consisting of Si Ying, Jaslyn, Winnie and Jessica went up against 7 other halls in the second heats. In light of the skilful passing techniques and speedy strides of the female runners of the other halls, it is nonetheless an amazing feat that our females managed to clinch the 10th position overall. Great job girls!

Following that was the males 4X100 relay heats. If anyone thought that the female runners from Hall 3 were fast, their perceptions were quickly corrected after witnessing the lightning speed of the male runners from the various Halls. Comparatively, the male runners were much faster in terms of pace and passing techniques. Hence, despite our hall team, consisting of Michael, Wei Siong, Melvin and James securing a reasonably fast timing, due to unfortunate circumstances we were disqualified for this particular event.

The events quickly proceeded one after another and it was soon the 4X400 female relay heats. The comparatively longer distance is extremely taxing on the runners as can be witnessed from their fatigued faces and slower paces as they near the finishing line. As such I feel that it is indeed commendable that our female team, Jessica, Zhi Yuan, Jaslyn and Carmen bravely competed and completed the race despite not making it into the final 8.

Last but not least, the 4X400 male relay was to conclude the entire morning’s events. The race was particularly exhilarating with the dramatic over-takings and physical collisions that took place in the heat of the moment. Our male runners fared well but due to yet another unforeseen circumstance, our second male team was also disqualified from the heats.
In spite of our results, I believe that most of us who went down to support our fellow hall friends had a great time at the tracks! Let’s look forward to another week end at the tracks next week at the finals then! =)

Sepak Takraw
28 January  2010

By Melvin Lim

28th Jan 2010, the day our Hall 4 Sepak Takraw teams, heads for their semi final match against Hall 3. This is by far the furthest our sports team made to and with at least 30 Hall 4 residences there rooting for the Ohmers, the team was ready to kick butt.

After some warm up and a few balls hitting the supporters, the 1st Rugu starts with the team of James, Jevon and Hong Ming. Doing well, they won the 1st set with many spectacular saves and headings. But they were unable to keep up the pace and lost the 2nd and 3rd set. Giving Hall 3 a 1 point lead.

The 2nd Regu started with the best team of the Takraw team, Yong Hwa, David and Zhong Leong. But it seems that Hall 3 employed the same tactic of placing the best team in the 2nd Regu. Hall 4 fought hard but lost the 1st 2 sets giving Hall 3 the winning point.

With Hall 3 winning 2-0, our last team still played the last Regu (Praga, Chun Rong and Daniel) showing the sportsmanship of Hall 4!

Hall 4 Sepak Takraw team has done us proud by reaching the Semis! Well done guys!

Inter-Hall Games – Hall 8 Swimming By Wilson Ng With a deafening blare of the horn, the swimmers dived into the cool waters and off they sped. Despite the scorching sun on their back, the Hall 8 competitors at the IHG (Swimming) swam with their might and managed a commendable 6th overall placing.  Freestyle (Male) performed the best – coming in 3rd, while Freestyle (Female) and the medley events settled for 8th place. Held at the SRC, the swimming meet saw many supporters braving the sweltering heat to cheer on their hall mates. Team Captain Ken Vin noted that the Hall 8ers trained hard before the competition. The determined team-mates clocked in twice-a-week practices, and even when school reopened, they still trained at least once a week. Bravo to a great effort, Hall 8!
